Senior Spotlight: Ava Perez

Over the next few weeks, leading up to Lee County High School’s graduation, we are going to spotlight seniors that have made an impact on the school community over the last four years.

SANFORD – Ava Perez is known for her exceptional ability to juggle school, sports, and other commitments, all while maintaining an impressive work ethic and leadership skills. As a coach, captain, and academic standout, Perez has earned the admiration of her teammates, friends, and teachers.

“I was scared of her,” Ava Baldwin said, describing her initial impression of Perez. “She just seemed so intense and driven.”

However, as they got to know each other, Baldwin realized that Perez’s determination wasn’t just about competition it was about uplifting those around her and encouraging them to be their best.

Perez’s leadership on and off the field speaks volumes, especially as the captain of the soccer team. Her commitment to improving her own game while motivating her teammates to do the same is a testament to her strong leadership qualities. “Her ability to show up all the time, never be late, never miss anything, and still be able to maintain her grades is impressive,” said Gracie Currin, a junior teammate. “She’s a good example to not only me, but our whole team.”

Perez’s dedication to both her role as captain and her academic success sets a high standard for everyone around her.

Ryan Patterson, a coach who has worked closely with Perez, noted, “She has always been incredibly athletic. Playing soccer, she didn’t start until much later than most kids do. But with her work ethic and just being such a hard worker, I knew she would catch up in no time.” This determination is evident in everything Perez does, from sports to academics to her work as a coach.

She thrives on challenges and is always looking for ways to push herself further. “She thrives off of being challenged,” Patterson said. “I think she enjoys proving people wrong and works hard to be the best at whatever she’s doing.”

Balancing the demands of being a coach and a player might seem overwhelming, but Perez has found a way to make it work. “I use coaching as a relaxing break for myself from academics,” Perez said. This ability to manage stress and find balance between her responsibilities shows her maturity and her capacity to lead by example.

“No one works harder than Ava. She is one of the most determined kids I have ever seen and coached,” Patterson added. Her work ethic and positive attitude inspire others to push through their own challenges.

Time management is another key to Perez’s success. With a schedule packed with soccer practices, games, and academic responsibilities, Perez has mastered the art of organization.

“She has good time management when it comes to having school, practices, and games,” Currin said.

Whether it’s working on homework during bus rides to soccer games or reviewing notes during spare moments between practices, Perez makes sure every minute counts. “I just think about my future, and that I want to be successful,” Perez said. Her future-focused mindset drives her to prioritize her time effectively.

Despite her busy schedule, Perez also places a high value on relationships. “She’s just been like a good friend,” Baldwin said. “I feel like I could talk to her about anything, and she’ll validate it.” Even with the demands of school and sports, Perez takes time to support those around her. This balance of personal connection and achievement is something she actively cultivates, and it contributes to her strong presence as a leader.

Perez’s ability to stay positive despite the stress of her schedule is another trait that sets her apart. “Her ability to keep a happy and joyful attitude through all of the stress she is under is really inspiring,” said Ashton Gaddy-Harrison, her boyfriend. “I’ve never seen her get overwhelmed or lose her composure. She just keeps going, and that’s something I really admire about her.”

Whether it’s facing a difficult class or a challenging soccer game, Perez handles every situation with calm and positivity.

Her teammates often turn to her for motivation. “Stay focused, don’t give up,” Perez advises when they face challenges. “She motivates me to be my best self,” said Gaddy-Harrison. Perez’s simple yet powerful words leave a lasting impact on those around her. Her positivity not only keeps her own spirit high but also creates a supportive environment for others to thrive.

Perez’s leadership is also evident in her commitment to improving her team as a whole. “She doesn’t only show that she tries in practice and especially games, but she also shows that she wants everyone to get better,” junior Addison Allen said. “She pushes you to work harder.”

Perez encourages others to give their best effort, whether it’s during drills or through a kind word of encouragement. Her selflessness and dedication to the success of the team make her a standout leader.

Bart Harrison, Perez’s social studies and IB psychology teacher, sees her leadership in action. “What you see is what you get,” Harrison said. “She’s not phony or fake. She works hard and does what’s asked of her.”

Perez leads through her actions, always putting in maximum effort. “She is just a remarkable young lady and one of my favorites,” Harrison added.

Perez may not always be the loudest or most outspoken person in the room, but her quiet strength and dedication speak volumes to those around her.

Perez’s approach to leadership, whether it’s through her hard work, encouragement, or positive attitude, makes her a role model to her teammates, friends, and coaches alike. “When we had an Adidas banner that we had to put together and the stand for it was like 75 pieces, without any instruction or guidance she just figured it out. 15 minutes later she had it constructed all by herself,” Patterson said. “I remember thinking how many kids her age could have done that?”

Perez’s ability to take on any challenge and see it through to completion is just one of the many ways she demonstrates her exceptional leadership and commitment to success.

Through her hard work, leadership, and positive attitude, Perez has become a source of inspiration for those around her, proving that success comes from dedication, resilience, and the willingness to support and uplift others along the way.

Perez will attend Methodist University in the fall where she will continue her academic and soccer careers.
