SANFORD-The AVID class is hosting a PowderPuff game at Lee County High School and have
worked hard to make it possible for all students to participate.
At LCHS, PowderPuff has always been a tradition, but with Cherice Washington leading the AVID program, the regular schedule has been changed. The game had previously been in the first semester of the school year but will now be on April 29.
The PowderPuff game had always been in October, making it hard for athletes who play Fall
sports to play in the game. ”Many students play fall sports. They weren’t allowed to participate in Powderpuff as a result. I wanted them to have the opportunity,” said Washington.
With PowderPuff typically being in October, the game was also a fundraiser for breast cancer
awareness. Washington is continuing this by donating part of the money raised to breast cancer
awareness. “We chose the PowderPuff game to fundraise and help raise money for AVID, also to
donate to other people in our community and to gain money for breast cancer awareness,” said
Savanna Martinsen, a sophomore AVID student
Washington is not the only one who has been setting up the game however. The AVID students
have been working hard since January to make sure the PowderPuff game was properly prepared for. “The AVID sophomore class has done most of the work planning Powderpuff, and I couldn’t be more proud,” said Washington.
“Preparing for PowderPuff has been stressful but with help from Mrs.Washington and the rest of our students we are balancing out our AVID work and PowderPuff,” said Destiny Mckendall, a sophomore AVID student.
Administration approved of the PowderPuff game in March to no surprise. AVID is a trusted
class at LCHS and has become very reliable over the years. ”They know they can trust us with the steps to take to make sure PowderPuff is successful,” said Martinsen.
Tickets are five dollars and can be purchased on GoFan or with cash or card at the gate before
the game.
