SANFORD – Lee County High School is gearing up for an exciting event as auditions for the spring play, “The Addams Family” Musical, are set to take place on January 24 and 25 at the LCHS Auditorium. Theatre teacher Ron Coley and music teacher Alexa Hughes are co-directing, bringing their expertise to create a memorable production. This casting call invites all LCHS students to showcase their talents and become part of the school’s theatrical legacy.

Set in the eerie yet endearing Addams household, the musical follows the quirky family as they navigate love, acceptance, and the unexpected. With iconic characters like Wednesday, Gomez, Morticia, and the rest of the kooky clan, this musical offers a perfect blend of humor, heart, and a touch of the macabre. Chaos ensues as Wednesday Addams, the princess of darkness, falls in love with a “normal”’ young man named Lucas Beineke. When the Beineke family is invited to dinner, two vastly different worlds are brought together.

When asked about the inspiration behind selecting “The Addams Family,” Coley shared, “It’s a fun show; I had seen it on Broadway some years ago and enjoyed it. Knowing many kids were fans, I thought it would be a good choice.” Coley’s choice aims to blend nostalgia with a fresh perspective, aligning with the students’ enthusiasm for these beloved characters.

He shed light on the audition process which involves reading from the script, with the expectation that individuals bring a unique perspective to the material and to demonstrate their vocal abilities by singing songs acapella to him and Hughes. This dual approach ensures that the chosen cast members not only embody the characters but also possess the vocal prowess to bring the musical to life.

In response to concerns about the show’s appropriateness, Coley reassured, “I feel like the show really isn’t that inappropriate. Maybe a bit scary for young kids, but it doesn’t focus on inappropriate content.”

Hughes expressed her excitement, saying, “I am super excited to bring this iconic family to life, doing such a popular TV show turned musical right here in Sanford!” Hughes looks forward to infusing energy into the iconic Addams Family, creating a memorable experience for both the cast and the Sanford community.

Lee County High School is eagerly anticipating the upcoming auditions for “The Addams Family” production, which will run from Thursday to Sunday, March 21-24th.
